John raises fund for charity home as birthday wish

19 Aug 2007 -

KUALA LUMPUR, 19 August 2007 - Johnson Wee, the champion of Project Superstar 2006, has managed to fulfill his birthday wish to raise a five-figure fund for a charity home in Kuala Lumpur within a 2-week period.

Having been designated as the "Angel" for Angels Children Home, John (as he is affectionately known as) made it his birthday wish this year to raise funds for this charity home to help ease their current financial problems. He made a commitment to raise a five-figure fund before his birthday on the 21st of August, through the "Angel's Project".

Initiated by John himself, this fund raising campaign was planned and executed within only three weeks. His management company, The 8 Unit, had given him their best trust and support in assisting him to make this campaign a success. During a charity event organized for the children of this charity home at Izzi Café yesterday, John was proud to announce that the total fund collected through this campaign amounted to RM22,388.

His initial worry of not being able to fulfill the target of a five-figure fund was diminished immediately after making a personal visit to the children's home. What he saw and what he experienced during the visit gave him a booster shot of motivation to help these children in his best ability.

"When I visited the home, I thought to myself, how can the parents of these children abandon or abuse such adorable little beings? I felt a pinch in my heart when I saw their innocent eyes and expressions", said John.

He also added that, these children may not look any different from their peers, but each of them comes from extremely ruthless backgrounds. He remembers having realized that one of the children had a huge scar at the back of her head. Afraid of having the child recall bad memories, he did not ask the reason for the scar, but on the contrary, managed to force a smile on his face albeit feeling sad for them, to ensure that the children were having a fun time with him.

Point Blanc, of the Ipoh Mali fame, and Jane Lee, finalist from Project Superstar 2006, was also present during this event for some cross-over performances with John. Both guest performers mentioned that it felt great to be able to do something back for the community.

Other than thanking the team at The 8 Unit for their best support in making this campaign a success, John also thanks his family and fans for their generosity in contributing, and all media friends for helping to spread the message out through their various mediums to encourage contributions from the public nationwide.

This campaign also saw much support and corporate sponsorships from the following brands: 8TV, MPH Bookstores, Game Flier PC Online Game, Samsung MP3, Faber-Castell, K-Zone Magazine, World of Cartoon, Kipling and Marigold.

Having had the support of Chinese radio station 988, John also traveled with their 988 Happy Cruisers around town to collect funds from the public at shopping malls, schools and colleges, just to name a few. Speaking of his experience, John says, "It was not easy to ask for donations from total strangers, some of them even gave us the cold shoulder. I hope the public will soon realize that there are many needy children out there who desperately need our help to keep on surviving. With a little contribution and support from us, we can help bring hope to their future!"
